Diamonds' Class

Spring  2018/19                        DIAMONDS CLASS Year 1/2

 

Dear Parents and Carers,

 

I hope you have had a very enjoyable Christmas holiday! We are looking forward to the exciting opportunities planned for this term. These are attached to the back of the letter.

 

Things to remember:

 

  • School times – 8.45am – 3.15pm.
  • Uniform – please make sure ALL items of clothing are named, including coats and hats.
  • PE– Wednesday and Thursday. Outdoor trainers will be needed on these days. It is extremely important that your child is equipped for these sessions. It is advisable that your child brings their PE kit in on a Monday and leaves it in school until Friday.
  • Homework will be given out on a Friday and due in on the following Wednesday- please support your child with this where possible.
  • Weekly spellings will be given out on a Monday and must be learnt ready for a spelling test on the Friday.
  • Daily reading– your child will be given the chance to choose their own reading book in school. It will be their responsibility to change the book when they have finished it and get a parent signature. Please support your child in regular reading.
  • SMIRF targets- Your child will have two instant recall target facts (SMIRFs) for maths. Please support your child to practise these at home ready to be tested fortnightly in school. If you have any questions regarding the SMIRF targets, please do not hesitate to ask.

What will we be learning in Diamonds this term?

English:

We will be reading the books ‘Beegu’ by Alexis Deacon, ‘Stella, Sidney and the Moon’ by Emma Yarlett, ‘The Magic Bed’ by John Burningham and ‘Yeti and the Bird’ by Nadia Shireen.

Within these sessions we will be focusing on:

  • Lists, labels and captions
  • Character Descriptions
  • Setting Descriptions
  • Story writing
  • Non-chronological reports
  • Letter writing
  • Poetry

We will be learning about and using the grammar, punctuation and spelling objectives from the year 1/2 curriculum.

 

Maths:

  • Fractions
  • Measure
  • Addition and Subtraction
  • Number and Place Value
  • Statistics

Throughout these lessons, children will be practising their fluency, reasoning and problem solving skills linked to these units of work.

 

Science:

Our topics for the term are ‘everyday materials’, ‘using our senses’, ‘plants’ and ‘the apprentice gardener’.

 

History:

Significant individuals:

  • During this unit of work, the children will be learning about: What makes someone an important or significant person, who was Christopher Columbus, Neil Armstrong, Robert Falcon Scott, Florence Nightingale, Mary Anning and how they could be remembered.

 

Geography:

Our geography unit this term is ‘Weather in the UK and around the World’, where we will be learning about: What weather is, how the weather affects us, forecasting weather, weather dangers, hot and cold weather and our frozen planet.

 

Computing:

Our topics for this term are ‘grouping and sorting’, ‘creating pictures’, ‘spreadsheets’ and ‘coding’. During these topics we will be exploring Purple Mash, the internet and search engines. The children will learn about spreadsheets and how they are used. While looking at coding the children will participate in a range of activities where they will code.

 

PE:

Our units for this term are:

  • Gymnastics
  • Dance
  • Invasion Games

 

Music:

In music the children will be exploring ‘What’s the score?’ and ‘Rain rain go away’ where the children will be exploring instruments, symbols, timbre, tempo and dynamics.

 

Art and DT:

The skills we are going to be concentrating on are drawing and collage.

In our art lessons, we are going to be developing our drawing skills through focusing on portraits. We will then be looking at the work of LS Lowry and creating city collages. During this the children will be encouraged to develop their scissor control.

 

Our DT day this term we will be focusing on cooking and nutrition where the children will be making healthy meals.  

 

PSHE: Our PSHE topics are:

Keeping Myself Safe

British Values – Mutual respect, tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs.

My Healthy Lifestyle

 

RE:

The RE unit this term is: Holy Places: What we can learn from visiting a holy building.

We will be looking at visiting the local church and exploring what we can learn from visiting a church.
