Diamonds' Class

Spring A 2017/2018                  DIAMONDS CLASS Year 1/2

Dear Parents and Carers,

A warm welcome back to you all for the second half of the Spring term.  I hope that you all had a relaxing break and are ready for the next six weeks. There will be lots of opportunities for exciting learning and we have lots to fit in over the next few weeks so I hope the children are well rested too. Please find an outline of our learning below.

Things to remember:

  • School times – 8.45am – 3.15pm. Classroom doors are open from 8:35. Please leave your children at the entrance to the classroom, unless you need to speak to me or Mrs Calam about your child.

  • Uniform – please make sure ALL items of clothing are named, including coats and PE kits.

  • PE– Monday and Wednesday. For both of these afternoon sessions, your child will be taking part in gymnastics sessions. It is important that your child has their indoor PE kit for these sessions.

  • Daily reading – your child will bring home a reading book each day, please sign in your child’s reading record and indicate pages read. We are continuing the reading challenge – each time your child reads at home they will get a point. When your child reaches 21 points they will receive a special prize!
  • Homework will be given out on a Friday and due in on the following Wednesday- please support your child with this where possible.

  • Weekly spellings will be given out on a Friday (with homework) to be practised at home ready for a test on the following Friday.

  • Your child will have two instant recall target facts (SMIRFs) for maths and these are found at the back of their reading record. Please support your child to practise these at home ready to be tested at least fortnightly in school.

Diamonds topics

· English
We will be looking at fiction and non-fiction texts this half term. Oure class books will be ‘Tadpoles Promise’ and ‘Florence Nightingale’.  In our writing, we will be working on verbs and adverbs, adjectives, alliteration and speech marks among other skills. We will try our hand at writing explanation texts, narratives, letters, setting descriptions and fact files.

· Maths
We will be covering lots of different areas of maths this half term and in the run up to SATs. The children will be learning about capacity and reading scales, multiplication and division including times table facts and fractions. This will also include lots of work on problem solving and reasoning in order to broaden their knowledge of these topics.
